THE CHARITY which raises funds for hospitals in Warwickshire and Coventry is urging supporters to celebrate Captain Sir Tom Moore’s achievements by taking part in a special fund-raising event.

Following the outpouring of heartfelt messages since the death of Captain Tom on February 2, his family pledged to celebrate his life with the Captain Tom 100 event – and the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) Charity is inviting supporters to get involved.

Captain Tom 100 offers UHCW Charity supporters of all ages and abilities the chance to raise crucial funds for the charity – which has suffered during the pandemic from the cancellation of fundraising events – while celebrating Captain Tom’s generosity of spirit, hope, and his sense of fun.

Participants can think up their own Captain Tom 100 challenge, based around the number 100, and do it anytime and anywhere over Captain Tom’s birthday weekend – Friday April 30 to Bank Holiday Monday May 3.

The challenge could be walking 100 steps or running 100 metres, scoring 100 goals, baking 100 cakes, climbing 100 stairs, hopping 100 laps of the garden, building 100 sandcastles, writing a 100-word poem, or flipping 100 pancakes.

Once supporters have chosen their challenge, they can fund-raise or donate to the UHCW Charity.

Jo O’Sullivan, UHCW Charity Director, said: “Captain Sir Tom was the inspiration behind the nation’s support for our NHS during this most difficult of years.

“To celebrate this wonderful man by raising funds for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, where the world’s first Covid 19 vaccination took place, is a fitting tribute to Sir Tom and to our amazing staff for all their tireless efforts.

“So let’s all have some fun and raise some funds to make things better for our staff, our patients and their families.”

Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said: “We are so grateful for the incredible support we have received since my father started his record-breaking fund-raising walk and that his message of hope was shared with the world.

“Captain Tom was very proud to be able to leave behind the growing legacy of his Foundation. We know he would love the idea of inviting everyone to get involved and share their Captain Tom 100 so that together we can ensure ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’.

“We look forward to celebrating with you on what would have been his 101st birthday weekend – it’s going to be fun!”
