Warwickshire step closer to 20mph speed limit in residential roads

Leamington Editorial 8th Jul, 2021   0

A SPEED limit reduction across residential areas in Warwickshire is being considered by county bosses.

Warwickshire County Council has moved one step closer to implementing the move after a proposal was put forward by the Green Party.

Before voting on the motion, Conservative leaders included other options which would take into consideration the outcomes of reducing the speed limit.

The amended decision, passed unanimously, included forming a cross-party working group to consider the evidence, cost, impact and benefit of 20mph speed limits in residential areas including schools and sites of wider interest.

Green Party councillor Jonathan Chilvers, who presented the motion, said: “I’m disappointed that the Conservatives didn’t want to make a firmer move towards 20mph limits, but this is a good first step. 20mph limits in residential areas are proven to reduce road accidents by at least 20 per cent. This isn’t about putting expensive and controversial speed humps in, but creating a better place for us all to live and travel about in.

“Some councillors were worried about whether residents would want their street to have a 20mph limit. Please do contact your local county councillor to let them know what you think.”

A decision, based on the report, is expected in January 2022.
