WORK to improve Southam town centre is set to begin next week.
Warwickshire County Council awarded the contract to carry out the works, which are likely to be completed in August 2015, to Miletree Construction.
The works, which will begin on Monday (June 1), involve minor changes to the existing carriageway on Market Hill, modifications to existing parking arrangements, the installation of a pedestrian refuge, and the provision of hard standing for bus passengers.
An upgrade of the existing footway and carriageway on Market Hill are also in the pipeline while some of the existing street furniture is set to be upgraded and Wood Street closed off to all traffic.
It is likely temporary traffic management arrangements will be used during the construction stage, which could cause some delays.
Coun John Appleton, county councillor for Southam, said: “The enhancement of Southam will have great benefits for pedestrians, improving their safety, and making the town centre a more attractive proposition for visitors.
“It will also have great benefits for motorists and people using public transport and is an important part of the council’s programme of transport enhancements.”
Coun Philip Johnson, chair of communities added: “The works will help the town centre be more accessible to pedestrians as well as improving the experience for residents who choose to use public transport.”
