MP Matt Western takes residents' fly concerns to Parliament

MP MATT Western has pressed parliament for answers on residents’ ongoing fly problem.

The MP for Warwick and Leamington questioned the Minister for Rural Affairs on the fly problem which has plagued many residents in South Leamington and Whitnash.

In the House of Commons Chamber, Mr Western asked the minister to meet with him and the Environment Agency to get the issue resolved. The minister agreed.

Hundreds of residents were first affected by the issue of a large number of flies in their homes last spring and are growing increasingly concerned as the season approaches again.

At its peak last year, residents reported that they were unable to eat meals without flies landing on their food, their children couldn’t sleep due to the number of flies in their rooms and that they were having to constantly clean fly faeces off surfaces and their homes.

A public meeting was organised by Mr Western last September where over 100 residents came to share their frustrations about the ongoing issue, desperately hoping for a resolution.

Mr Western has repeatedly raised the issue with Warwick District Council and the Environment Agency, pushing for a resolution to ensure that residents do not have to live through another season dominated by flies.

Mr Western said: “I know how many residents are understandably concerned as we approach spring again. I will continue to press the relevant agencies and the government to resolve this issue.

“It is welcome that the minister has agreed to a meeting to discuss how we can get a resolution and I’ll be updating residents following the meeting.”

A confirmed source for the problem has not been identified but the Environment Agency said over the summer they were looking into a number of possible sources, one of which is the recycling plant just off the Tachbrook Road run by Berry Polymers.

A statement from Berry Polymers last year said they were aware of the excessive flies in the residential area surrounding the industrial estate where the factory was based and would continue to work with all relevant agencies and the local community in order to identify and implement actions to alleviate the issue.
