Beekeepers all abuzz after scooping award

Leamington Editorial 3rd Dec, 2016   0

BEEKEEPERS are buzzing after Leamingtion’s Jephson Gardens received a Bees’ Needs Award.

Warwick District Council’s Green Spaces team were recognised by Keep Britain Tidy for their work encouraging pollinators to the park.

The team have been busy planting ‘pollinator friendly’ shrubs which produce nectar for insects to feed on or provide shelter from the elements.

Insect homes have also been created using dead wood, bamboo, slates and bricks.

Warwick and Leamington Beekeepers also maintain a lodge in the East Lodge Garden.

Beekeeper Colleen Abell said: “More than 1,500 species of insect pollinate plants in the UK including bumblebees, honeybees, solitary bees, wasps, butterflies and moths. These insects need food and shelter throughout the year because they are vital contributors to our environment and economy. We are delighted with the work that Warwick District Council is doing in this area.”
