Brakes raise money in memory of football fan who died from heart condition

THE LEAMINGTON Brakes are raising money for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Club chairman Matt Turner and volunteer Beth Phillips have organised a sponsored walk, run and ride at Draycote Water on March 25 in memory of Beth’s late husband Duncan Phillips.

Duncan was a fit 39 year-old who loved playing football each week with his friends and colleagues from Jaguar Land Rover.

During a game in April 2013, Duncan collapsed on the pitch and died a short time later, leaving behind his wife Beth and two young sons Sam and Tom.

Sam and Tom are now aged 8 and 6 and are avid footballers, playing weekly for Leamington Brakes in the U9s and U8s Colts teams.

The condition which sadly took Duncan was a hereditary heart condition which could have been picked up by a simple, non-invasive test called an ECG.

Beth and the Leamington Brakes are hoping to raise £3,500 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) so they can hold a free heart screening day to test the hearts of 100 young people aged 14-35.
