THE 100th birthday of the Forces’ Sweetheart Vera Lynn was celebrated in nostalgic style by residents at a Leamington care home.

Priors House care home on Old Milverton Lane celebrated Vera Lynn’s milestone birthday with a sing-song, and BBC’s Newsnight even visited to speak to residents about their memories of Dame Vera and why the song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ was so important for those who lived through the Second World War.

Staff dressed in period costume including army uniform and 1940’s frocks complete with rollers and musical entertainment was provided by singer Maggie O’Hara.

Priors House manager Francine Summers said: “We had a brilliant day celebrating Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday and the residents thoroughly enjoyed singing memorable hits from their younger years.

“Singing can be a powerful reminiscence activity, and many of the residents will have grown up listening to Vera Lynn’s music.

“Even when memories become particularly hard to remember, often music can still be recalled, so a group sing-along can be calming for those living with dementia, and can encourage them to talk about memories from their childhood.”
