FOOTBALL - Racing Club Warwick lose top spot after Cogenhoe defeat

Leamington Editorial 6th Sep, 2023   0

RACING Club Warwick saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end following a 3-2 defeat away at Cogenhoe United.

The Racers fell to defeat at Compton Park after Archie Hamp’s effort and a Harley Mallard own goal had drawn Scott Easterlow’s side level only for Cogenhoe to score a penalty and take the points.

And the result means Warwick drop to fourth in the United Counties League Premier Division South table after losing for the first time in eight matches.

Warwick won nine corners in the opening 10 minutes but failed to make any of them count while Josh Parsons went close with a free-kick and Charlie Jones saw a header cleared off the line.

However, Cogenhoe scored with their first attack as Dylan Wilson’s free header gave the home side the lead.

And Cogenhoe doubled their advantage from a corner as Mallard capitalised on some slack marking to head home.

The Racers responded before half time when Hamp drove the ball home from 18-yards out after a fine run before Mallard turned Luke Shearer’s drilled cross into his own net at the start of the second period.

However, Shearer spurned a glorious chance to complete the turnaround, heading wide with the goal at his mercy.

And Cogenhoe then won a penalty after Hamp dragged down Mallard in the box and Wilson fired home the resulting spot kick to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Racing.

Warwick are next in action away at Daventry Town on Saturday, September 9 with kick-off at 3pm at Elderstubbs.
