Chamber and early music feature in Leamington Music winter season

Leamington Editorial 21st Aug, 2017   0

THE TWELFTH Leamington Music winter season starts on October 6.

There will be 19 concerts of chamber music and early music over the six months period.

The Investec International String Quartet Season opens at Leamington’s Pump Rooms with the return of the Anglo-Dutch Navarra Quartet for the first time in nearly a decade. The Takács Quartet from the USA and led by Leamington-born Edward Dusinberre plays in the series for the second time on November 16, and the Kodály Quartet from Hungary follows a fortnight later. In the New Year, the Atrium Quartet from Russia, the Arcadia Quartet from Romania and the London Haydn Quartet all make return visits.

The Baxi Early Music Season at St Mary’s Church Warwick starts on Tuesday October 10 when Ex Cathedra brings its programme Monteverdi: In search of 1610, as part of the Monteverdi 450 celebrations.

The recorder quartet Palisander performs in Warwick for the first time on November 7 and in January, the Gesualdo Six, also makes its Warwick debut.

The other concerts in the monthly series are given by The York Waits, Joglaresa and The Bach Players, the latter giving its eleventh concert here since it first came to Warwick in 2000.

And Raphael Wallfisch will play the six Bach cello suites at St Mary’s Church in a fund-raising concert on Saturday October 28.

There are three Christmas Concerts programmed for December.

In Warwick, the Mellstock Band will be at the Lord Leycester Hospital on December 5 and The York Waits are at St Mary’s in the Baxi series on December 12. The Carice Singers will perform at St Mark’s Church in Leamington on December 21. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served at all three concerts.

The Spa Centre Leamington has four concerts in the season. The Avesta Saxophone Quartet, the 2017 winners of the Leamington Music Prize, perform on November 23. Ensemble 360 return on Sunday February 11 with a morning Family Concert featuring a new work by Paul Rissmann, Stan and Mabel and the Race for Space and an afternoon concert of Brahms. The season ends on Sunday March 18 when the Schubert Ensemble of London gives a concert as part of their nationwide tour before retiring in the summer.

Festival director Richard Phillips said: “The season has the range of music that our audiences expect and it is good to be introducing four new groups to perform alongside ones that we already know and will be very pleased to see here again.@

“We have a new location for our box office at the Royal Pump Rooms Visitors Information Centre and we look forward to the help this will give us in widening our appeal.”
