Leamington Music Prize winners celebrate with town concert

Leamington Editorial 8th Nov, 2023   0

LEAMINGTON Music Prize Winners Junction T Trio perform at the town’s Kingsley School on November 23.

The annual prize is awarded following a competition in March each year to students at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and the winners are given a sum of money and a concert in the following Leamington Music Winter Season as a stepping stone into professional life.

This year’s winners the Junction T Trio features Japheth Law on flute, Gen Li on cello and Daisuke Yoshida on piano.

Japheth is from Malaysia, Gen from China and Daisuke from Japan, met at the Conservatoire in 2018 and have been playing together ever since.

The trio’s name derives from the tip of the letter T, each representing a different part of Asia.

The trio’s programme will feature works ranging from Elgar’s Chanson de Matin, Monti’s Csárdás and Saint-Saens’s The Swan, further works by French and Spanish composers, and culminating in Trio in G minor by Weber.

Leamington Music’s artistic director Helen Beecroft said: “It’s never an easy task to decide who should win the Leamington Music Prize – how do you choose when offered this unusual trio, two string quartets, a saxophone quartet, a cello and piano duo, and a brass dectet?

“However, these outstanding musicians were absolutely head and shoulders above the rest. We were particularly impressed by their professionalism and dedication – they performed for us almost straight off the train from London having competed in the semi-final of the Royal Overseas League competition that afternoon!”

The Leamington Music Winter Season has 17 concerts in all, ranging from brass bands to the tango.
