Leonkoro Quartet launch Leamington Music Winter Season.

LEONKORO Quartet launch Leamington Music Winter Season at the town’s Pump Rooms on October 6.

The Berlin-based foursome won the 2022 London international String Quartet Competition.

They will start their programme with Schubert’s Quartet in G minor, written in 1815 when he was 18 years-old, and then continue with Janáček’s Quartet No 1, written a century ago in October 1923. The concert will end with the first of the three quartets by Brahms, completed in 1876.

The Leonkoro Quartet takes its name from the Esperanto word for Lionheart and are currently being heard regularly on BBC Radio 3 as one of the station’s New Generation Artist for the last year.

Festival director Richard Phillips said: “Leamington Music’s first concert took place 17 years ago to the day, on October 6, 2006. It was given by the Endellion Quartet and the Leonkoro Quartet’s concert will be the 165th featuring string quartets that we have put on since then.

“If anyone asks why we pursue this single-minded approach to programming, the answer is simple – the string quartet has for 250 years brought out the very best in so many composers – and today’s composers are continuing to add to the rich repertoire that has been built up over the years.”

The season will also include performances by the Calidore Quartet from the USA, the Dudok Quartet coming from Holland, together with three British quartets – the Consone, the London Haydn and the Carducci Quartet.
