SINGER-SONGWRITER Lucy Farrell will be performing songs from her debut album ‘We are only Sound’ In Leamington this weekend.

The Kent-born, Canada-based songstress Lucy Farrell, who is quickly making a name for herself in contemporary English folk music, will play Temperance on Bath Street on Saturday (March 11).

Talking about the album, Lucy said: “The feel of the album, well, it’s about being at home and working stuff out – relationship stuff, and then working out being a mum. This is how I work through my feelings and wonderings, in songs. And there’s quite a lot of wonderings in them, not answers.”

Finding an international audience among artists like Julia Jacklin, Emily Portman, The Weather Station, The Unthanks and Eliza Carthy, the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner Farrell is not only awarded as a renowned composer and singer, but also as viola/fiddle/tenor guitar-player.

Her work as a band member and collaborator with such artists and projects as Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band, Gluepot, Modern Fairies, The Furrow Collective, Carthy Oates,Farrell & Young, and her duo work with Andrew Waite and Jonny Kearney, respectively has meant releasing a collection of her distinctive solo work has had to wait – until now.

“Maybe people have mostly heard me do traditional songs but this album is all things I’ve written. These songs are influenced by tradition, and then of course my love of songwriters generally – Adrianne Lenker, Kate Bush and Richard Thompson.”

Gabrielle Drake, the actress sister of the late Nick Drake, offered a space to record the album and even gave Lucy the privilege of recording with Nick’s acoustic guitars and piano.

“It was kind of a medieval building that we were in, and we took over the attic at the top and slept downstairs. They got Nick Drake’s piano and guitar tuned for us, so yes, of course we included those instruments in the recording. Working with people who get what you sound like is great and Kris is great like that. The songs sound like you imagined them. Towards the end of the week we did a listening party for Gabrielle and that was really lovely because she was sort of overwhelmed by the things happening on Nick’s guitar and piano. That was really, really wonderful.”
