Newly crowned BBC Young Musician heading to Leamington

NEWLY-CROWNED 2022 BBC Young Musician, percussionist Jordan Ashman, performs at Leamington’s Royal Spa Centre on Sunday November 13.

Jordan, who is from Cambridgeshire and studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, performed the Percussion Concerto by American composer Jennifer Higdon with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in the Bridgewater Hall Manchester to win the pretigious ompetition – only the third percussionist to do so in nearly half a century.

The Spa Centre concert, promoted by Leamington Music, will feature three brass bands in a programme marking Remembrance Sunday and the 150th anniversary of the birth of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Jordan will play a solo – Over the Rainbow – on marimba as well as performing as part of the bands.

Headed by the Tredegar Band, which played in two BBC Proms this summer, the concert features the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Band, also conducted by Ian Porthouse, and Youth Brass 2000 with its conductor Chris Jeans.

The concert has works by Berlioz and Strauss as well as Vaughan Williams and includes Songs from the Great War by Bruce Fraser and at the end, the massed bands will play Lest We Forget by Christopher Bond.
