YOUNGSTERS at Warwick’s Playbox Theatre pay tribute to the boys who signed up to serve in the First World War.
The Shadow Roads is a new play created specially for Playbox Theatre’s Young Production Company which can be seen at the company’s Dream Factory home from Wednesday (July 2) to Sunday July 6.
Written by Toby Quash, the play reflects the lives, journeys, beliefs and shocking outcomes for many underage boys signing up to fight for King and country in the Great War.
Many lied about their age so determined were they to fight, but none were ready for the horrors awaiting them in the trenches.
Director Emily Quash said: “The statistics of underage soldiers that signed up to serve in the First World War and the number of those that lost their lives doing so is shocking.
“It seems fitting and moving that Playbox’s Young Production Company have been set the challenge of bringing their memories to life.
“Rehearsals have been demanding and reflective, with our actors having to draw upon their full range of skills. I never cease to be amazed by the ability and intelligence with which this age group approaches its work…quite humbling.”
The cast of 40 includes Oliver Lloyd as underage soldier Jack, along with Oliver FitzGibbon as his comrade Alexander, and Tess McGoldrick and Tallulah Markahm as French orphans Sophie and Alice.
