SEAN Hughes will be raising a laugh when he takes to the stage at Stratford Artshouse on Friday July 25.

The Perrier Award winning Irish comic stops off as part of his current tour Penguins.

He has many TV, film and radio credits to his name, including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Sean’s Show, and Coronation Street, and was also voted number 40 in Channel 4’s World’s 100 Greatest Comedians poll.

His career started in the late 80s with slots at the Comedy Store in London, but it really took off when his show, A One Night Stand With Sean Hughes, won the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990.

He marked his 30th birthday with the Sean Hughes is Thirty Somehow tour, which was broadcast on Channel 4 in 1995, but kept himself busy with other projects before returning to stand-up, touring the UK and Australia in 2007 with his show, The Right Side of Wrong.

As well as comedy, he has also written two novels – The Detainees and It’s What He Would Have Wanted – and also presented weekend radio shows, including presenting the Sunday morning programme on BBC 6 Music.

Supporting Hughes will be Canadian funnywoman Allyson June Smith, who gave up a career as a teacher back in 2000 and who has not looked back since.

Compereing the evening will be Windsor.

Visit or call 01789 207100 for tickets priced £8.50 (£10 on teh door). The laughter starts at 8pm.
