Sound of brass at Leamington's Spa Centre

THE SOUND of brass can be heard at Leamington’s Spa Centre on Sunday (November 12).

The Tredegar Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, is one of most famous and successful brass bands in the world – both on and off the contesting stage.

This concert, promoted by Leamington Music, marks Remembrance Sunday and features music by Strauss and Sibelius among brass band classics, works by Leamington-born composers Robert Simpson and Robin Holloway, and even a Judy Garland tribute.

The opening performance will be given bt Warwickshire and Coventry Youth Brass, conducted by Simon Hogg.

A truly grass roots innovation that emerged from the pandemic, WACY Brass has been developed on a completely voluntary basis with no cash funding, but with significant ‘in kind’ support from several local community brass bands and their members, along with Brass Bands England, the Warwickshire Music Hub and local venues.

Leamington Music’s artistic director, Helen Beecroft said: “It is a great privilege to be able to bring this champion band back to Leamington in what has become an annual tradition. It is an even greater privilege to be able to involve the local community – especially young players and school children – and offer them the opportunity to hear brass band music of this quality right on their doorsteps.”
