Star-studded cast makes The Sound of Music resounding success

LIGHT-hearted family fun with impressive sets and well-sung musical numbers makes this production of the Sound of Music a resounding hit.

The show is currently running at the Birmingham Hippodrome until Saturday (May 28) with a star-studded cast.

The Voice finalist Lucy O’Byrne impresses as nun Maria who is sent from the convent to work as a governess for the Von Trapp family, headed by Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel as Captain Von Trapp.

Maria is asked to care for the children – and the entire family quickly fall in love with her

The real-life story tells of an Austrian family escaping from the Nazi’s in the Second World War.

And where I always found the film very slow, the onstage version of the hit musical is enchanting and led to rousing applause at the end of every song.

The real star of the night was little-known actress Annie Horn as Liesl Von Trapp – showcasing teenage innocence through her excellent rendition of Sixteen Going on Seventeen and managing a great portrayal of the character.

The band keep the performance tight, with a beautiful rendition of the legendary score.

And the imposing and impressive sets take you to the Von Trapp’s grand staircase – which sets the scene for many a song and dance – and inside Nonnberg Abbey, where Jan Hartley as Mother Abbess does a pitch-perfect version of Climb Every Mountain.

The dainty dancing and sweet performances by the Von Trapp children are of course one of the highlights of the show, but the entire production takes you back to your childhood and had the audience singing along to the musical hits.

As the standing ovation and audience bursting into song proves – the Sound of Music is a hit for musical-lovers of any age.
