Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and the West Midlands are regions brimming with hidden treasures and delightful activities that don’t cost a penny. From the verdant gardens of Leamington Spa to the historical footsteps of Sir Edward Elgar, there’s something for everyone to enjoy without breaking the bank.

Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa

Located in the heart of Leamington Spa, the Jephson Gardens offer a serene oasis for a relaxing stroll or family picnic. Visitors can admire around 140 species of native and non-native trees, explore a sensory garden, or spot whimsical sculptures including a rhino, dragon, and hedgehog. There is also a play area across the river in Mill Gardens for the little ones to enjoy.

Clent Hills, Romsley

Offering breathtaking views across Worcestershire, and even as far as central Birmingham on a clear day, the Clent Hills is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. The car park has a charge (free for National Trust members), there is free parking available on the lanes surrounding the hills. The site is part of the North Worcestershire Way, a 27-mile walking route that passes through the hills.

Hartshill Hayes Country Park

Known for its spectacular displays of bluebells in the spring, Hartshill Hayes Country Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts all year round. The park is comprised of two areas of ancient hilly woodland and offers panoramic views over four counties on a clear day. Additionally, there is an adventure play area and tea kiosk on site.

Elgar’s Legacy, Worcestershire

Sir Edward Elgar, the renowned English composer, spent much of his life in Great Malvern. Today, visitors can retrace some of his famous footsteps and explore the marks his legacy left on the landscape. Highlights of the trail include the Elgar Statue and Priory Gatehouse, now the Malvern Museum in Abbey Road.

Stratford-upon-Avon Canal

For those looking to immerse themselves in the idyllic English countryside, the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal is a must. Stretching 25 miles from the Birmingham suburbs to the River Avon in Stratford, the canal passes through the Forest of Arden and an area rich in Shakespearean history.

Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford

Free by timed appointments, the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford offers a fun, entertaining day out for the whole family. Housed in wartime hangars and the National Cold War Exhibition, the museum boasts a vast display of aircraft and exhibits to explore. Additionally, there is an outdoor aviation-themed playground for younger visitors.

A Free Night In

But, don’t forget, you don’t have to leave the house to have a good time. There are plenty of free activities to enjoy from the comfort of your own home. From hosting a movie marathon to trying your hand at cooking a new recipe, the possibilities are endless. For those who enjoy online gaming, many online casinos offer no deposit free spins, allowing you to try your luck without spending a penny. There is a wide range of games available to play too from slots to classic table games.

If you prefer some console or PC gaming instead, there are also many free-to-play games available. From the popular Apex Legends to Fortnite, to new titles popping up like Project L and Stormgate. Plus, many online stores like Epic Games tend to offer free games every month so you can be sure there is always something new to jump on.

So, as you can see, there is plenty to do that doesn’t cost a penny. Sure, you may have to travel a little while, but you’re able to keep costs low by making packed lunches, and can even add in additional activities that you make up yourself while you’re out and about like trying to spot local wildlife. And if some of these places are too far, then you can have just as much fun staying indoors.
