Awkward reunion in Pinter classic at The Loft

THE GREEN-EYED monster rears its ugly head in Harold Pinter classic Old Times at Leamington’s Loft Thetare.

Married couple Deeley (Rod Wilkinson) and Kate (Lorna Middleton) are being visited by Kate’s friend Anna (Mary MacDonald). Close friends at one time, the two women have not seen each other for many years.

The strained atmosphere of their reunion is made worse by Deeley’s suppressed jealousy of their former intimacy and his secret lust for Anna.

As Deeley and Anna compete for possession of Kate’s affections and memories, she resolutely remains contained, in control, not to be “possessed” by either.

But how true are our memories, or do we simply remember the past in a way that best serves our present needs? With sleight of hand, this play quietly takes the audience into dangerous territory where one person’s possession of another is the name of the game.

Written in 1970, the haunting play invites the audience to witness a painfully awkward reunion between married couple Deeley and Kate, and their friend Anna.

Director William Wilkinson said: “This elegant, witty play is Pinter at his most compelling.

“The dialogue crackles with scalpel like precision, and the grip and fascination of the shifting relationships of the three characters never lets up.”

Old Times runs from June 3 to 10. Visit www.loft-theatre.co.uk for tickets and further details.
