WARWICK itself takes centre stage at Warwick Words Summer Festival.

Events at the festival, running from June 4 to 8, include talks on Warwick’s 1,100 years of history since its foundation in 914, and on the town’s architecture.

Graham Sutherland uncovers the darker side of Warwick’s history, Anthony Leahy and Edward Montague Nelson take a look at the history of Warwick’s Nelson family, Dr Gillian White talks about the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694; and Richard Elverstone charts the history of our local schools over the last 140 years.

With this year also marking the centenary of the start of the Great War, Taylor Downing and Jon Cooksey will be exploring and illuminating wartime-events, and there will also be a workshop exploring First World War poetry.

The festival line-up also includes historian Selina Todd talking about the rise and fall of Britain’s working class in the past century; Richard Wallace explores the ways we remember the past; and author Jo Eames delves into the true story of one man’s race to invent crucial secret weapons for D-Day.

And author Lindsey Davis, creator of Roman sleuths Marcus Didius Falco and Flavia Albia, also features in the programme which includes a workshop run by Warwick University’s Clare Rowan about how word and image on ancient Roman coinage combine to create messages.

While writers Ian Mathie and James Andrew Taylor will lock horns in a debate about the existence of the spirit world.

The programme also includes a literary pub quiz with quizmaster Marcus Berkmann – compiler of Private Eye’s Dumb Britain column, and local writers can read their work at Warwick Words Writers’ Group Open Mic session. There are also events for children.

Festival Executive Director Helen Meeke said: “Last year we introduced a new, mini-festival, weekend format with events in June and October. We had an overwhelmingly positive response to this and so we are delighted to stage a Summer and Autumn festival again this year.

“Our popular series of Tea Time Talks, in association with the University of Warwick, are also continuing, and for the first time we will be hosting a series of Workshops in association with the University.”
