Budding carpenter 'honoured' after scooping job in Kenilworth Castle grounds

A BUDDING carpenter is carving a name for himself after being chosen to recreate a new ‘mayor’s bench.’

The old bench at Kenilworth Castle, which features plaques with names of all the town’s mayor’s, is being replaced after many years in the castle grounds.

The new bench is being built by furniture crafts student Matt Brown who studies at Leamington College.

The design – chosen from among competing students – will retain the semi circular shape of its predecessor, and is due to be installed later this year.

Matt said: “to have the bench I’ve designed and created for the castle’s visitors is a real honour.

“My design is modern, but I’ve incorporated traditional elements – and it’s made of English Oak so it will fit in well with the setting.”
