Caring student lends a hand supporting refugees in Calais

A KIND-hearted student has been on a ‘life-changing’ mission to support refugees in Calais.

Leila O’Hara from Warwick recently spent the weekend in France with other local students and teachers volunteering with Care4Calais – a charity delivering aid to the some 1,000 refugees in northern France.

The 17-year-old Myton sixth former spent time working in the charity’s warehouse sorting items before travelling to distribute them among the refugees.

She also gave the charity some £1,500 in donations along with items on its ‘much-needed’ list such as sleeping bags, socks and gloves and mobile phones.

And Leila was so moved by the plight of the refugees she plans to return to volunteer again later this year.

She said: “Seeing the conditions and the lives these people are leading was incredibly eye-opening and the whole experience was life changing for me. I can’t wait to return for two weeks in the summer to carry on the important work this charity is doing.”
