COVENTRY and Warwickshire is experiencing an ‘historic’ cold snap, says a local weather expert.
Steve Jackson of Bablake Weather Station said yesterday (Wednesday) did not see temperatures in Coventry rise about -2 degrees.
That made it the coldest day in the city since 1991, said the man who has been measuring the mercury in the city for decades.
This morning’s temperatures were -5 degrees again, but colder in the ‘Siberian’ wind in what has been the dubbed the ‘beast from the east.’
Met Office yellow warnings were in place for today, meaning more snow and ice was being predicted.
Mr Jackson said: “This is exciting weather and it is historic.
“Yesterday was the coldest day since 1991. A generation of people, those in the 20s, have never experienced weather that cold here.”
But it was not cold enough for many, namely those who were hoping they would be off school or could work from home!
Snow on the ground has been thin in Warwickshire, unlike the dump of up to 15cm early this winter which shut over 100 schools in the city alone.
Only two Coventry schools have closed so far this week.
Weather forecasters predict the cold spell to continue into next week, albeit with slightly milder temperatures.
