Date set for opening of Kenilworth Station

Leamington Editorial 20th Apr, 2018   0

THE FIRST train is set to pull into the new Kenilworth station.

Warwickshire County Council has revealed the station will come into service on Monday April 30.

It was expected at the town’s new £13.6million station would open last December, but just days before the scheduled opening the Department for Transport (DfT) said no train or drivers would be available until February to operate a service on the line running between Leamington and Coventry.

There was a further delay as Warwickshire County Council prepared a safety report for the rail regulator at the Office for Road and Rail.

But now a date has been set.

County council joint managing director Monica Fogarty said: “I am pleased to say that Warwickshire County Council and West Midlands Trains have agreed that Kenilworth Station will come into service on Monday April 30. More details will follow regarding timetables and ticketing as soon as it becomes available.”

West Midlands Railway will manage the station which will operate a service on the line running between Leamington and Coventry.

The new Station Road station – on the site of the town’s former station which closed in 1965 as part of the so-called Beeching Cuts – also includes a ticket office, 90-space car park and cycle parking.
