Drivers hit out at new-look Leamington roundabouts

HIGHWAY chiefs are closely monitoring new-look roundabouts in Leamington following an angry reaction from drivers.

The busy Europa Way and Ford roundabouts have been the focus of a year-long revamp that has seen traffic lights installed, additional lanes, together with a shared footway and dedicated off-road cycle routes, and improved crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists.

But drivers have been quick to voice their frustration and concerns after facing long delays at the new lights. A recent Sunday saw queues stretching back up Queensway almost as far as Tachbrook Road.

And the additional lanes have also caused problems with drivers saying entry and exit lanes do not match up, forcing them to change lane mid roundabout, often cutting in front of other drivers.

One disgruntled driver told The Observer the new lanes were “an accident waiting to happen” unless changes was made quickly.

A Warwickshire County County spokesperson said: “We appreciate the concerns raised regarding the ongoing works at the Europa Way and Ford roundabouts in Leamington. The scheme is currently undergoing a Road Safety Audit, as per our processes, and will be closely monitored following completion. Any issues identified during this process will be addressed accordingly.

“While some queuing during peak times is expected due to high traffic volumes on all approaches, the current delays are being compounded by nearby roadworks, including those on Old Warwick Road and Banbury Road. These works form part of a wider diversion route, which has temporarily increased traffic pressure in the area. Additionally, it will take time for drivers to adjust to the new road layout.

“It’s important to highlight the long-term benefits of the scheme, which include high-quality pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. These improvements enhance connectivity between residential areas and the retail sector, promote safer and more sustainable travel options, and contribute positively to the urban environment.”

The work on the roundabouts is part of the multi-million pound project to improve the main route in and out of Leamington from the M40.

It is one of the road projects, like improvements to the Birmingham Road into Stratford, looking to help to cope with thousands of new homes being built in south Warwickshire.

The spokesperson added: “All input will be taken seriously and considered as part of our ongoing monitoring and review process.”
