Extinction Rebellion Warwick District to hold protest outside Leamington Town Hall

Leamington Editorial 25th Jun, 2020   0

EXTINCTION Rebellion Warwick District is holding a protest outside Leamington Town Hall today.

Between noon and 2pm on Thursday (June 25) campaigners will protest the inaction of government towards the climate and ecological emergency.

It follows a report by the Climate Change Committee which says government is failing in its commitments to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Protestors will hold banners and perform music before holding a ‘lunchtime picnic’ to celebrate the closing of the Parade to vehicles.

Group spokesman Chris Philpott said: “We would like to highlight the positive steps Warwickshire County Council have taken in closing the Parade to vehicular traffic, improving the experience for pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore we thought we would take this opportunity of the vehicle free space by holding a picnic. This will provide a positive uplifting occasion to celebrate the reclaiming of streets.”

The afternoon protest comes after the campaigners take a letter to Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western saying action needs to be taken following the report.
