Firefighters help local author research book for those with learning disabilities

FIREFIGHTERS help with many things but not often with books.

But a Leamington illustrator found the crews at her home town station more than helpful when she needed to research her book Belonging.

Lucy Bergonzi’s book is for people with learning difficulties who find pictures easier to understand than words. Within the book, the characters encounter a fire which is attended to by the fire service.

And to help research her illustrations, Lucy contacted the Dale Street station, and firefighter Gary Smith invited her to visit to see the equipment used in a real-life incident, including breathing apparatus and hose.

Lucy said: “As Belonging aims to tell a story in a realistic way, it’s important that the events depicted are as accurate as possible. I really want to thank Gary and the rest of the team for their help.”

Gary said they were more than happy to help.

He added: “Warwickshire Fire and Rescue is committed to supporting communities and making people safer in any way we can and we’re happy to help people learn more about what we do.”
