Heroism and Bravery Recognised in Latest Gallantry Awards List

Twenty extraordinary individuals have been honoured for acts of exceptional courage and selflessness in the latest Gallantry Awards list, announced today.

The recipients have been recognised with one of three prestigious awards: the George Medal, the King’s Gallantry Medal, and the King’s Commendation for Bravery.

The honours include 2 George Medals, 3 King’s Gallantry Medals, and 15 King’s Commendations for Bravery, acknowledging bravery both in the line of duty and among members of the public who placed themselves in danger to protect others.

Among the recipients is Grace O’Malley-Kumar, posthumously awarded the George Medal for her remarkable courage in intervening during an armed attack in Nottingham on 13 June 2023. Her selfless actions helped protect others during the incident and have been recognised as an enduring example of bravery and compassion.

Richard O’Brien has been awarded the King’s Gallantry Medal for his heroism in confronting an armed assailant in Barnet on 21 September 2021, while Alicia Richards and Molly Bulmer have both received the King’s Commendation for Bravery after intervening during an armed attack at a Sheffield school on 1 May 2024.

Police officers PC Mark Sutton and PC Thomas Dransfield have also been recognised with the King’s Commendation for Bravery for rescuing a man from falling from a bridge on 22 November 2023, an act which saved a life at great personal risk.

Three of the awards announced today have been given posthumously, and will be presented to the recipients’ next of kin in recognition of their ultimate sacrifice.

Gallantry Awards are among the highest civilian honours for bravery in the United Kingdom, granted to individuals who display outstanding courage in the face of danger.

Today’s announcement serves as a reminder of the courage and selflessness that define the very best of British character, ordinary people performing extraordinary acts in service of others and their communities.
