RESIDENTS have raised concerns over reports a hotel in Warwick is preparing for the arrival of hundreds of asylum seekers.
The Delta Hotel, on the Stratford Road just off Longbridge roundabout, is set to provide temporary accommodation for some 360 single male asylum seekers over the coming weeks.
Simon Armer told The Observer: “My elderly parents who live a few yards from the hotel called me this morning to tell me the news. I thought they must be mistaken but I have just visited the site and can confirm it is closed, fenced off and there is a security guard on the entrance.
“I have also phoned the hotel reception. They have also confirmed that the hotel is now closed and under government contract. I also observed a number of young men sitting and standing outside the hotel entrance.
“My parents advise that they have had absolutely no communication from Warwick District Council about this change of use which appears to have happened literally overnight. They are very concerned as are a number of other local residents.
“I have written to Rob Margrave, chair of the council, to ask for clarification as to what is going on and why local residents who literally live within a few yards of the hotel have been told nothing.
“It was my understanding that one of the Labour Party’s pre-election promises had been to stop using migrant hotels due to the huge cost to the British tax payer.”
The move comes just days after the government withdrew guidance, introduced in March, which sought to stop the use of hotels to house asylum seekers.
Back in March, the previous Conservative government stated: “As we exit hotels, we will continue to demand that local authorities deliver on their mandated commitments to their regional dispersal plans. Dispersal accommodation is cheaper to the taxpayer and more manageable for communities.”
Warwick District Council issued a statement on its website on Friday.
“We do not get involved in the placement of asylum seekers. It is advised by the Home Office once they have commissioned the hotels.
“Warwickshire Police are aware of a situation, and will be monitoring over the weekend alongside partner organisations.”
