Leamington Food Festival lifts foodies spirits

FOODIES failed to be disappointed as Leamington Food Festival went ahead at the weekend, “after much consideration”, following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Organisers BID Leamington decided to go ahead with the popular two day celebration of the best local and regional food and drink, with adjustments to the programme, “to reflect their deep respect for Her Majesty the Queen”, they announced in a statement.

The free event, which also celebrated its 15th anniversary, was staged in the Pump Room Gardens on Saturday (September 10) and Sunday (September 11), featuring over 115 exhibitors including 37 town centre businesses.

But there was also an opportunity to sign the book of condolences provided by Warwick District Council (WDC) in the conservatory at the Pump Room Gardens and flags around the town were flown at half mast or taken down.

A period of silence was held when the proclamation for King Charles III was read out on Sunday afternoon, as well as a minute’s silence held on each day.

There were other adjustments to the programme to reflect the mood and provide collective pause for thought, in particular in toning down the music and entertainment provided.

The organisers said they felt it best to continue with the festival as participating traders had gone to considerable effort and expense to prepare for the event at a time when many were facing huge difficulties.

A spokesperson continued: “In these times there is merit in people coming together in our beautiful town, to share thoughts and memories to support each other.

“We appreciate that people will wish to mark this incredibly sad time in different ways and ask that these differences are respected.

“Our Queen was an extraordinary lady whose life must be admired and celebrated. She was enormously generous with her compassion, courage and humour and served us with unwavering humility and kindness.”
