Leamington resident branches out with a new tree guide

BARKING up the wrong tree could be a thing of the past in Leamington.

Christchurch Gardens at the top of Parade, which is known to many as “Top Park”, is home to a wide variety of trees, which have been identified thanks to the knowledge and enthusiasm of resident Sidney Syson.

A new flyer, published by The Friends of Christchurch Gardens, supported by The Leamington Society, identifies the species and where in the world it originated. The flyer is supplemented by further interesting facts about the species and specific tree online at focg.org.uk/tree-map.

Copies of the flyer are available free of charge from the Town Hall, Leamington Library or the Information desk at the Pump Rooms, or head to the Friends’ website.

The gardens were opened to the public in 1829 and were “temporarily landscaped” following the demolition of Christ Church, which stood opposite the top of Parade until 1959. They remain largely unchanged, although several of the trees have been planted since this time.
