A PLEDGE has been taken to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of hospital maternity staff.

South Warwickshire Foundation Trust’s (SWFT) maternity services have signed-up to the Royal College of Midwives’ (RCM) Caring for You charter.

It will improve the support available to midwives and staff, allowing the organisation to continue providing high levels of care.

The charter includes five key principles which include creating a joint action plan, ensuring access to flexible working and breaks, zero tolerance on bullying, access to occupational health and a compassionate and supportive workplace.

Head of Midwifery Melanie Crockett said: “The trust is fully dedicated to ensuring the principles of the charter are adhered to. We understand maintaining and supporting an open workplace benefits both staff and service users.

“We pride ourselves on our high quality compassionate care, and signing up will be an investment in our staff and enable them to deliver safe, effective care for women and families.”

Nearly half of all trusts have signed up to the charter since it was launched a year ago.

Royal College of Midwives Officer Lesley Wood said: “I am delighted the trust has signed the charter. They have a committed team of midwives and maternity support workers, led by an enthusiastic head of midwifery committed to the welfare of her staff. This is a very positive move and I welcome their commitment to staff and the people they care for.”
