Motor industry celebrated in new exhibition

Leamington Editorial 14th May, 2017   0

BRITAIN’S motor industry is celebrated in the British Motor Museum’s latest exhibition.

British Motoring Treasures: the British Motor Car in Fifty Objects will showcase the industry and the key role the West Midlands played in its history from May 19.

From ground-breaking inventions to pieces of social history, archive material and artwork visitors will be able to find out more about the motor industry and the collections held by the Gaydon museum.

They will be able to see a publicity booklet from 1910 issued by the Shell Company which throws new light on the ill-fated Antarctic expedition led by Captain Scott – the motorised sleds built by Wolseley used on the expedition proved mechanically unreliable and unsuitable for the severe conditions experienced at the South Pole.

And cars will also be on display, including a 1899 Wolseley Voiturette – the first 4-wheel car Herbert Austin designed – and a 1965 sectioned Austin Mini.

Running alongside the display a ‘People’s 50’ will be assembled where people and community groups can loan, nominate or suggest significant objects of their own to display during the exhibition which will run until March 2018.

* THE CLASSIC Land Rover Show is returning to the British Motor Museum earlier than normal.

Now in its third year, the show will bring vehicles, owners and historians together over the weekend of May 6 and 7.

The show will take a look back into the history of Land Rover’s development and feature some of the rival vehicles which were also in development at the time, with crews and vehicles from the Austin Champ and Austin Gipsy clubs attending.

Tickets cost £14 with family, concession and camping rates available. Visitors will also be able to visit the museum which is home to a wide range of Land Rovers, including HUE, the first Land Rover ever off the production line.
