New home found for fish from Kenilworth's Abbey Fields lake

A NEW home has been found for more than 650 fish living in Kenilworth’s Abbey Fields Lake.

As reported in the Observer last week, many of the fish in the lake died following a drastic fall in water levels due to the recent extreme temperatures.

Officers from Warwick District Council (WDC) explored every option available to try and save the fish but to no avail.

This included attempting to relocate the fish but due to the lake’s low water level at the time that proved too difficult, as well as the hot temperatures making it extremely unlikely the fish would survive the journey.

But with the fall in temperature, WDC again sought permission from the Environment Agency to move the remaining fish and it was granted. As a result, some 650 fish from the lake have now been successfully removed and rehomed at a fishery.

WDC Deputy Leader, Coun Richard Hales, said the council would like to thank all partners and members of the public who assisted at the lake over the past few days.

He continued:” It has been incredible for me to see the community spirit of Kenilworth in action, and I am grateful to everyone who has helped with this difficult and distressing situation. Over the next few months, we will work with all our relevant partners and interest groups to see how we can ensure that this sort of incident does not happen again.”

Other attempts to move the fish during the drought conditions included trying to aerate the water using the traditional method of a water pump and adding water to the lake from the mains as a temporary measure. This had to be called off due to water restrictions imposed by Severn Trent.
