New Leamington mayor to champion diabetes charity

THE NEW mayor of Leamington aims to champion a cause close to her heart.

Coun Judith Clarke received the mayoral chain from out-going mayor Coun Alan Boad at an official ceremony at Leamington Town Council’s annual meeting.

Coun Clarke, a former secondary school teacher and family therapist, has been an active town councilor for more than 13 years, dedicating her time to various community groups and activities. And as a resident of the town for over 30 years, she said she is proud to represent Leamington as mayor for a second time.

Coun Clarke has chosen the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as her charity. The rates of type 1 diabetes are increasing in the UK and the charity carries out world-class research to treat, prevent and cure it. The charity also campaigns to promote better treatment and technologies for sufferers.

The charity is very close to Coun Clarke’s heart, as she has two grandchildren who contracted the disease at a very early age and she knows how hard it is for families to cope with young children and teenagers who have the disease.

Coun Clarke continued: β€œIt is my privilege to represent the town for the second time – the first time was 2014-15 – and I am excited to do so again. A highlight will be meeting the varied voluntary groups, and the many people who give their time freely to help others. I hope to offer my support to the diverse community that is Leamington.”
