Potential locations of district's new homes revealed

Leamington Editorial 17th Feb, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

CHANGES to the district’s Local Plan could see more than 1,800 homes built near Stoneleigh and 700 in Kenilworth.

The document – which shapes the development of the district over the next 15 years – was recently rejected by a planning inspector and Warwick District Council were told changes had to be made.

The final draft copy of the plan has now been released nearly a month after it was due. It was pushed back due to Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Greg Clark overturning the council’s decision to refuse permission for the building of 900 homes on the Asps in Warwick – situated between Europa Way and Banbury Road. He also allowed 450 homes to be built on nearby Gallows Hill.

Council chiefs have now added these sites to the document. They have also made a number of changes including earmarking land north of Stoneleigh for 1,800 homes.

In a move which could see Kenilworth School relocated, 640 homes could be built near Crewe Lane and Glasshouse Lane, and a further 100 on land off Warwick Road.

And an extra 250 homes have been earmarked for Milverton off Old Kenilworth Road if the document is accepted by councillors at a meeting next Wednesday (February 24).

The document also places a number of smaller developments in villages including Bishops Tachbrook, Hatton Park, Leek Wooton and Radford Semele.

The district council is required to build 10,800 homes by 2029 to meet local needs, and an extra 6,000 to help meet Coventry’s unmet requirement.

So far some 7,000 of these homes have already been built or had planning permission granted.

Council leader Andrew Mobbs said: “We want to provide homes for our children and grandchildren while making sure these developments are good for the economy and help people who work locally be able to live in the area.

“If this plan does not go through we will have government crawling all over us and want to be able to decide things at a local level and need these plans supported by everyone.”

The council say they have chosen to place the bulk of the homes near areas which are already developed or subject to development to reduce the need for extra roads and amenities.

They have also tried to situate more homes near Coventry to cover its unmet housing need and make commuting easier for those who work in the city.

If the document is accepted by Full Council next week, there will be a period of consultation before the document is submitted to the inspector for final agreement. A decision would then be expected early next year.
