Residents hit by same computer virus used to attack NHS

POLICE are warning internet users to be vigilant after receiving reports of victims handing over money to ‘tech support’ scammers.

Scammers claiming to be from Microsoft have been using the same ‘ransomware’ virus that recently caused chaos for hospitals across the country.

One victim fell prey after calling a ‘help’ number advertised on a pop up window, and fraudsters took a payment of £320 to install an anti-virus tool, usually available for free.

Police are reminding people that warning messages on PCs should never include a phone number and communication with Microsoft was always initiated by the user.

Victims of fraud or those concerned should call the Action Fraud line on 0300 123 2040.
