The ups and downs of keeping Warwick Castle spic and span

CHIVALRY is alive and well at Warwick Castle thanks to a daring cleaning crew who pulled an all ‘knighter’ to carry out the iconic landmark’s annual external clean.

As the historical attraction gets ready to welcome thousands of visitors this summer, the two-person team proved they had a head for heights by abseiling down the 30 metre walls of the castle’s south front to remove weeds and tidy up the 800 year old stonework.

The specialist cleaning process took around 40 hours to complete and covered an area spanning 3,000 square metres with the daring duo collecting some 20 rubbish bags of weeds from the castle’s nooks and crannies.

The weeds are not only unsightly if left to grow large the roots can cause damage to the stonework.

Matt Halford, head of estates and facilities at Warwick Castle , said: “It’s always great to see the south front refreshed to it’s full, and impressive glory ahead of our busiest time of the year.

“The annual cleaning is also critical to conserving the structure’s heritage, which we have worked hard to restore over the last 40 years and will help to ensure that the medieval structure is there for future generations to enjoy.”

It’s been two years since a multi-million pound five-phase major restoration programme spanning 40 years was completed to restore the castle’s south front towering over the River Avon.
