THOUSANDS of preserved seasonal plants and flowers will fill Compton Verney’s largest gallery for a ‘visually stunning’ new installation.
Artist Rebecca Louise Law was commissioned in 2019 to create a bespoke installation which would inspire visitors to look at and engage with nature in a different way.
And the resulting ‘Seasons’ installation is composed of thousands of preserved plants and flowers which have been collected by Rebecca, many from Compton Verney.
It begins with spring and takes the visitor through the year using preserved natural materials displayed above and around them, suspended on copper wires, with the display ending in winter.
The installation also includes footage from Rebecca’s Instagram account to showcase plants through a ‘diary’ experience.
Rebecca said: “Since 2019 I have been studying nature daily. Each day is documented through a paper diary, video diary and daily collection of natural material. Records of my life intertwining with the earth. The practice of observing each day with a focus on nature also led to a study of self. I found it impossible to separate the emotional attachment to a day and how I observed nature within that moment.
“An exploration of myself as a human being and our relationship with nature has led me to this exhibition.”
Compton Verney director Julie Finch said: “We want the whole experience to be immersive and inspire visitors to take time afterwards to contemplate the aspects of their surroundings, whether it be a humble pot plant perched on a window sill, dog roses in a country lane hedgerow, or the magnificent Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped park here at Compton Verney, there is much to be said for slow-looking.
“Rebecca’s installation and accompanying exhibition will be a delight for the senses and I think will make us all think about our relationship with and connection to nature and what role we play among it.”
The exhibition runs until August 30.
