Up-and-coming Warwick district athletes given leg up with training scheme

Leamington Editorial 24th May, 2023   0

UP-AND-COMING athletes from the district are being given a leg up thanks to a sports talent training programme.

Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme has helped thousands of athletes to achieve their sporting potential over the past seven years by providing free access to its leisure centres.

And among the athletes accepted on the scheme are Jade Anstis from Warwick, a long distance triathlon athlete.

Jade said: “I am so grateful for the access the scheme provides to my local swimming pools and gym, allowing me to train consistently at fantastic facilities. I am also able to visit pools around the UK to swim with my coached athletes, which is a huge help knowing that there are great quality facilities available around the country.

“To have these facilities on my doorstep is incredible, but to use them in the knowledge I am being uplifted by the support of the scheme is so inspiring and I am forever grateful. The inspirational elite athletes providing mentoring through the scheme has also been a real boost particularly through winter training periods.”

Also successful on the scheme this year is Dodgeball player, Jonathan Tetley.

Jonathan played last season for Leamington Spartans male first team and the Leamington Spartans mixed first team.

Alongside free access to Everyone Active centres, Sporting Champions will also have the chance to receive valuable mentoring and guidance from an impressive panel of Elite athletes.

The scheme’s all-star line-up of decorated Olympians and Paralympians includes Jennifer and Jessica Gadirova, Lutalo Muhammad, Richard Kilty, Lauren Steadman, Kadeena Cox and Maisie Summers-Newton.

Throughout the year, these Elite athletes will share their experience and expertise through group mentoring sessions, covering topics including mental wellbeing, nutrition, managing finances, social media and media training.

Olympic silver medallist Colin Jackson will also continue to support the scheme through his role as an Ambassador, working alongside the Elite athletes to make sport more accessible within local communities.
