VILLAGERS stepped back in time for VE Day celebrations at Mary Arden’s Farm in Wilmcote.
The home of Shakespeare’s mother threw open its gates to visitors on Monday (May 5) for a war-time style celebration including afternoon picnics on the lawn, rousing renditions of 1940s classics sung by live vocalist Betsy Harmony, and a toast to heroes of the past.
Guests were encouraged to dress up in vintage attire or in red, white and blue.
The event was hosted by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the charity which looks after the Shakespeare family homes, and was made possible by a donation from lifelong villager Anabel Murphy whose father fought in the war. Anabel wore his medals on the day in his honour.
Rachael North, CEO of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said:”‘It was our pleasure to play host to this special event, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe. We see Mary Arden’s Farm as very much part of the community, from hosting events like this for the village and to welcoming other groups including the Brownies or welcoming thousands of school children, we hope to create special memories.”
