Volunteers needed to support terminally ill patients and relatives

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to support terminally ill patients and their relatives.

The Compassionate Communities initiative is being launched by NHS trusts across Coventry and Warwickshire to support those who are approaching the end of their life.

Programme organisers say no specialist skills are required, just compassion, the time to listen and give support.

All volunteers would received training before being matched with a patient and family. Support would also be offered throughout the placement.

Chief nursing officer at University Hospital Coventry, Nine Fraser, said: “This initiative is hugely important as it is about reaching out and showing compassion to people when they are at their most vulnerable.

“It’s about being an emotional support at a point in people’s lives when they’re either preparing to die or when their loved ones have died.”
