Warwick district's road to net zero on public view

GREEN-minded residents will soon be able to peruse Warwick district’s ambitious climate change policy.

A public examination of Warwick District Council’s Net Zero Carbon Development Plan Document will take place next week.

When adopted, the policies within the document will require new standards on new developments to help meet the council’s ambitious Climate Emergency target of becoming net zero carbon by 2030, and the government’s target of meeting net zero carbon nationally by 2050.

WDC climate change spokesman Coun Alan Rhead said: “This planning policy document is a vital part of our plans to tackle climate change in the built environment at Warwick district.

Without such a policy intervention, we are seeing homes being built that are adding to our carbon emissions and to the global climate challenge.

“Every one of these homes will need to be retrofitted at some time in the future. This new planning polic,, if adopted, can help us build on the work of our housing service which has been building council homes to much higher environmental standards than the vast majority of newly built homes for sale.

“We are therefore looking forward to the examination of this document.”

The hearings will take place in person from Tuesday March 7 to Friday March 10 at Leamington Town Hall and will be live streamed on the council’s YouTube channel.

Following the hearings, the Planning Inspector will issue his report and following any modifications suggested by the Inspector, WDC will adopt the document.
