WARWICK Hospital’s A&E department is under ‘extreme pressure’ with many people suffering injuries due to the icy conditions.
The hospital, along with nearby University Hospital Coventry and George Eliot in Nuneaton, has seen a huge spike in people attending due to trips, falls and sprains.
Hospital bosses are reminding people to only use A&E for serious conditions or illnesses or injuries and instead visit a pharmacy, walk-in centre or call the NHS on 111 for advice.
A hospital spokeswoman said: “While we understand the cold weather can be difficult to cope with, especially particularly if you are more susceptible to illness because you are elderly or have a long-term medical condition, we are urging the public to help by not adding additional strain on already stretched services.”
The NHS is advising people to follow some steps to protect from winter illnesses and accidents –
1. Heat your home well by setting your heating to the right temperature (between 18-21ºC). It is especially important if you’re at home all day.
2. Eat well and have plenty of fluids
3. Get a flu jab
4. Look after yourself and others – On cold days try to avoid going outside. However, if you do need to go out, remember to wrap up warm and take care on slippery surfaces. If you have an older neighbour or relative, look out for them during the winter to make sure they are safe and well.
5. Keep your medicine cabinet well stocked.
