Claverdon suffer narrow defeat against Old Wheatleyans

Leamington Editorial 4th Dec, 2022   0

CLAVERDON scored the first and last points but fell to a narrow 17-13 defeat to Coventry visitors Old Wheatleyans in the Counties Two Midlands West (South)

Both sides had been promoted to the league last season, and after Claverdon’s home and away wins over Old Wheats last season, the visitors finished on top this time round.

Centre Sam Turrell slotted a penalty to give the Lions three points but Wheats soon responded with their own penalty kick to level.

A highly contested first half culminated in a lengthy spell of possession for Wheats who came away with a converted try to lead 10-3 at half-time.

With the advantage of the wind, Claverdon stayed optimistic going into the second half and Turrell landed another penalty.

Wheats replied with another converted try to leave Claverdon with plenty of work to do. With less than ten minutes left, James Williams and Hilton Garner-Jones combined effectively – the latter dotting over the line in the corner. A long-range conversion from Turrell took the score to 17-13 but they could not find another score.
