Connor Gudger leaves it late as Brakes sink Cambridge

A LATE Connor Gudger goal earned Leamington their sixth home win of the season against Cambridge City and more importantly kept them above Slough Town at the top of the Southern League Premier Division.

Gudger struck three minutes from time to earn the Brakes a narrow 1-0 victory at The Phillips 66 Community Stadium on Tuesday evening to extend an unbeaten home record to eight games.

Tunde Adewunmi was a threat to the home side early on as he came close on two occasions in the opening 15 minutes while Jack Edwards shot straight at Enol Ordonez in the seventh minute.

Shortly after the half-hour mark Leamington produced the best move of the half as Connor Gudger, Ryan Rowe and Ahmed Obeng combined to set up Courtney Baker-Richardson who fired home at the far post but the linesman’s flag was up for an offside infringement.

Just before the break Edwards was unlucky to see his header strike the bar as both sides went in level at half-time.

A big opportunity presented itself to Obeng on 63 minutes following a fairly low key opening to the second half but he shot straight at Ordonez and minutes later Rowe curled a 20-yard effort towards goal but the Cambridge goalkeeper saved again.

With 20 minutes to go the scoreline remained goalless but the hosts continued to press for an opener with defender James Mace seeing his header blocked on the line.

But with three minutes left on the clock Gudger was on-hand to fire home what proved to be the winner after Edwards’ initial shot had been saved.

Up next for Paul Holleran’s side is a home FA Trophy tie against Mickelover Sports this Saturday.
