Contrasting results for Leamington and Old Leamingtonians

Leamington Editorial 4th Dec, 2022   0

OLD Leamingtonians proved their quality with a disciplined performance to topple league leaders Berkswell & Balsall 27-12 in Counties One Midlands West (South) on Saturday.

Old Leam struck first when second row Jack Byrne was driven over by a strong forwards drive, with fly-half Ben Gordon landing the conversion.

The game was evenly balanced but Berkswell scored two tries just before the break to lead 12-7.

However, OLs began to took control in the second period. Number eight Callum Gosse finished off a fine move with a try out wide to level and Ben Gordon booted a penalty in front of the posts before then recording his first try for the senior side to open an eight-point lead.

Gosse then added another try, carving his way 40 metres through the defence after an OLs forward drive, with Gordon converting.

LEAMINGTON produced plenty of endeavour but failed to capitalise on their power play as they lost 20-8 at Spartans (Midlands) in Counties One Midlands West (South).

Although somewhat flattered by the final scoreline and in a game of few clear-cut chances, Spartans took full advantage of their limited attacking opportunities.

Chris John’s elegantly-flighted crossfield kick bounced kindly for winger Louis Harvey to collect and touch down for Leam’s opening score, ┬ábut Spartans replied to force their way over from a scrum for a try to level matters at half-time.

A penalty put the hosts 8-5 ahead but Leamington dominated. A Harry Johnson penalty made it 8-8 but for all their positional superiority early in the half, they fell to two late scores.
