CHUCK Weber has described Sunday’s thrilling 10-8 defeat at home to Belfast Giants in the Elite League as ‘nuts’.

Blaze fans were treated to one of the most entertaining games ever seen at the Skydome but it was the hosts who ended up as eventual losers at the final whistle.

The visitors raced into a 4-1 lead, with Jeff Mason scoring Blaze’s first of the match before the hosts fought back and pulled level at 4-4 thanks to goals from Drew Fisher, Brett Robinson and Ashley Tait.

Tait grabbed his second just nine seconds into the middle session and Cale Tanaka also scored to fire the hosts into a 6-4 lead.

But it was Belfast’s turn to come from behind as they got back on level terms at 6-6 and the visitors stormed in front to take a 9-6 advantage with seven minutes remaining.

Weber’s side showed plenty of character and fight with Carl Lauzon and Mike Quesnele making it a one-goal game but Belfast had the final say by scoring the final goal of the match late on to wrap up a 10-8 win.

“It was nuts,” said Weber. “I am pretty sure I have never given up ten goals in a game in my coaching career. I have never been part of something like that.

“Just like Saturday night we were down one going into the third but we gave up a short-handed goal and that really hurt us. Had we scored on the powerplay and made it 7-7, who knows?

“But we started to find some line combinations and got some chemistry and we got some output from some of the imports we had been hard on from a scoring standpoint.

“It was a crazy game but the guys showed a lot of character to battle back from being down 4-1 and they never stopped believing. There were a lot of positives.

“We now go back to work to try and weave everything together and clean a few things up along the way.”

Blaze are next in action this weekend for a double header which begins away at Manchester Storm on Saturday and the following day they host Nottingham Panthers at the Skydome.
