Leamington Editorial 24th Jan, 2023   0

THE Hundred is heading back to Birmingham for 2023, bringing with it four weeks of spectacular entertainment and intense cricket action at the height of the summer.

After two hugely successful years, the competition is set to kick off on Tuesday, August 1, promising high octane men’s and women’s sporting action, live music, and a host of family-friendly entertainment.

Edgbaston will host its first fixture on Saturday, August 5 with Birmingham Phoenix men’s and women’s teams both in action.

Trent Rockets are the visitors for the opening double-header, which means a match against last year’s champions for Moeen Ali’s men’s side.

More than half a million people attended games during The Hundred’s second year in 2022, including a record-breaking 271,000 watching live women’s fixtures across the competition and more families buying tickets than in 2021.

Alongside world-class cricket, fans were treated to memorable performances from a diverse line-up of artists and DJs including headliners Bastille and Kofi Stone, thanks to The Hundred’s ongoing partnership with BBC Music Introducing.

There will be an initial, exclusive window to purchase tickets from March 1-14 for anyone who has previously bought tickets for The Hundred.

Those yet to attend can sign up in advance at thehundred.com for priority ticket access from April 5-18.

Tickets will then go on general sale on April 20 priced at £5 for juniors aged 6-15, free for children five and under, and starting from £10 for adults.

The Hundred Eliminator, where second and third placed teams fight it out for a place in the final, is set for Saturday, August 26 at The Kia Oval. The Final itself will take place on Sunday, August 27 at Lord’s.

For the first time this year The Hundred will see both the men’s and the women’s competitions host a draft.

The date The Hundred Draft is due to be held is Thursday, March 2.

Deadline day – the day on which retained players are confirmed across both competitions – is set to be Thursday, February 16.

Moeen Ali, Birmingham Phoenix men’s captain said: “It’s always special to captain my home team and the support we’ve received so far has been incredible.

“Plans for 2023 are well underway and I can’t wait to see a packed-out Edgbaston inspiring the team to the final.”

Amy Jones, Birmingham Phoenix women’s wicket-keeper said: “The atmosphere at Edgbaston is second to none and the support we’ve received over the last two years has been incredible.

“We’ve gone close over the last two seasons and I know everyone within the team is determined to give their all in reaching the final. We’re all really excited about getting started in front of a brilliant Edgbaston atmosphere.”

Over 14.1 million people tuned in to watch The Hundred action in 2022 and games will again be broadcast live on Sky Sports and BBC broadcast and digital channels throughout the competition.
