CRICKET - Warwickshire captain Rhodes signs contract extension

WARWICKSHIRE captain Will Rhodes has signed a new contract extension which will keep him at the Bears until at least the end of the 2024 season.

The 27-year-old became the seventh Warwickshire captain to lift the County Championship in 2021, with success at Lord’s in the Bob Willis Trophy coming a week later.

Making his debut in 2018, the all-rounder has since played in all of Warwickshire’s 63 first-class fixtures and during that time he has fired 3,645 runs with eight centuries, whilst adding 60 wickets.

Rhodes said: “I’m delighted to have extended my stay at Warwickshire – a Club which I have made my home since arriving.

“I am extremely proud to lead this Club and I will always represent the Bear and Ragged Staff with great distinction.

“Since joining, I have seen first-hand how passionate and understanding our Members and supporters are and I’m sure, like me, they’ll always remember that final day against Somerset.

“Last year didn’t reach our expectations, but I must praise the attitude and spirit of the team to dig in and deliver such a dramatic finale.

“We’re all working incredibly hard this winter ahead of the new season and I know the whole squad is excited to get going.

“There is a buzz around the changing room at the minute and we can’t wait to return to action in front of our Members at Edgbaston.”

First Team Coach Mark Robinson added: “Will relishes leading the Bears and he’s a fantastic servant to the Club.

“Will is still young and has the opportunity to build on his career so far and the potential to lead Warwickshire for many years to come.

“He has been an ever-present fixture in the Championship team and I’m sure he’ll be looking to guide this great Club to more silverware in the near future.”

With the white ball, the left-hander has added 1,426 runs across the One Day Cup and Vitality Blast, as well as taking 42 wickets in 62 matches.

Awarded the captaincy in 2020, Rhodes, who has also led the England under-19’s and County Select XI, will be hoping his side build on their final day heroics against Hampshire last season.
